  • Marilyn Dondero Loop on the Issues Facing Our State

As I have been walking door-to-door and attending events in Assembly District 5, I have had the opportunity to talk to many of you about the issues that are important to you and your family.

Below are just a few of the issues I hear discussed most frequently. If you have any questions or suggestions on any of the issues below-- or any other issue-- I hope you will call me at 556-0224 or email me at marilyndonderoloop@gmail.com.

Marilyn Dondero Loop on the Economy

Working Nevadans are concerned about job security, families and retirees are worried about the high cost of basic necessities. The foreclosure crisis and the banking crisis are having a devastating impact on our economy.

While there are no easy answers, I strongly believe that by working together we can turn our economy around.

My priorities for the next legislative session will include—

    • Keeping taxes low.

    • Strengthening our laws on mortgage fraud, increasing access to credible counseling for homeowners in jeopardy of losing their homes, assisting renters being evicted from foreclosed homes.

    • Establishing a Revenue Stabilization Fund to help eliminate the boom and bust economic cycles our state has been experiencing

    • Better preparing every student for today’s workforce and providing career and technical education opportunities in our schools.

    • Working to increase the availability of affordable housing.

    Marilyn Dondero Loop on Education

I was a teacher and librarian in Clark County schools for 30 years. I volunteered my time serving as a mentor to new teachers and was also very involved in my own children’s school activities. Over that time, I saw many changes in our education system.

My priorities for the next legislative session will include:

    • Increase our graduation rate and better prepare students for today’s work world. We need to make sure we have career and technical education opportunities available in all high schools.

    • Give school districts the tools they need to recruit and retain the highest quality teachers.

    • Improve school safety by cracking down on drugs and gangs.

    • Protect education programs that have a proven track record of helping students succeed in school.

Marilyn Dondero Loop on Health Care

Rising health care costs are a problem confronting all of us---higher premiums and co-pays for workers with insurance, far too many Nevadans without health insurance—especially children, and senior citizens stretching dollars to pay for medical care and prescription drugs. In the aftermath of the Hepatitis C crisis, we need to restore public confidence in our health care system.

We need to work together on innovative solutions. My priorities will include:

    • Protecting NV Check Up to ensure Nevada’s children have health care coverage.

    • Improving transparency in health insurance policies, prescription drugs and the cost and quality of hospitals

    • Providing local health departments with the authority to temporarily close a health facility

    • Requiring accreditation and improving the inspection process of all ambulatory surgical centers and doctors’ offices where surgery is performed

    • Strengthening whistleblower protections for nurses

    • Continuing to work to reduce the cost of health care and prescription drugs

Marilyn Dondero Loop on Energy Independence

The high cost of gas is having a devastating impact on workers who must drive long distances to get to work, families and seniors struggling to pay for the rising cost of not only gas, but groceries and other necessities.

We must take steps to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Nevada has vast renewable energy resources that can help provide energy for our state.

I will work to reduce our dependence on foreign oil by:

    • Establishing a state transmission authority to make sure we can transport renewable energy from the location where it is produced to the areas where it is needed.

    • Modernizing Nevada’s Renewable Portfolio Standard.

    • Clarifying Nevada law to enable renewable energy companies to partner with Nevada homeowners and businesses to install affordable renewable energy systems

    • Requiring all government agencies to develop a plan and timeline for meeting energy efficiency standards.
