Marilyn Dondero Loop Announces Candidacy for Assembly District 5

Marilyn Dondero Loop, a retired elementary school teacher, has announced her candidacy for Assembly District 5, the open seat being vacated by Assemblywoman Valerie Weber. Dondero Loop is a Democrat.

A native of Las Vegas, Dondero Loop taught in the Clark County School District for 30 years. She currently works for a publisher of education instructional materials. She is the mother of three daughters and has one granddaughter.

Dondero Loop grew up in a household with a strong tradition of community service. Her mother, Thalia Dondero, currently serves on the Nevada University System Board of Regents and previously served 20 years on the Clark County Commission. Her father, the late Harvey Dondero, was a highly respected educator, who was a teacher, principal and school administrator during his 53 years with the school district and has a school named after him.

"As a life-long Nevadan, I am not satisfied with the status quo in our state, where we rank near or at the bottom of almost every list that compares our quality of life with other states. When it comes to educating our children, making affordable, quality health care available for all and making sure people feel safe in their own neighborhoods, we can do better," Dondero Loop said.

"Growing up in my household, sitting on the sidelines was never an option," she said. "I was taught at an early age the importance of working together to tackle problems and find answers."

Dondero Loop said while there are no silver bullet answers, there are steps that can be taken to address specific problems.

"For years, I worked as a mentor for new teachers. I understand the challenges teachers face, and we need to be doing more to support school districts in their efforts to recruit and retain the highest qualified teachers and to help them succeed. We need to be taking steps to ensure the quality of care for all patients in our state, including the elderly in nursing homes. We need to continue to work to safeguard our children, particularly those who have no one to stand up for them."

Assembly District 5 is located in the western part of Clark County. It currently has a Democratic voter registration advantage with 1206 more Democrats than Republicans, according to the Secretary of State's March numbers. The district has trended more Democratic since the last election, when there were 75 more Democrats than Republicans.
